I recently found and purchased, at a great price, an item on ebay. Two days after the sale closed, rather than the shipping confirmation I was expecting, a order cancellation notice was received. Are sellers able to cancel a sale for no reason?

you say you bought it at a great price . Could be the seller realized he made a mistake in price thus canceling the sale . It happened to me once on e-bay too . Is it legal

unfortunately ebay sellers can cancel transactions, for many reasons. same as a buyer can refuse to pay for an item.. Is it a good business practice.. Never.. I would write the seller and ask for the reason why they cancelled it.

Thanks, all. I wrote the seller to ask if the item would be relisted. I've been searching and watching ebay a few years for one to become available, I don't want to lose it.

I had a cancellation once. The seller made a mistake in the description (the item was not exactly what I wanted). They immediately informed me of the problem before cancelling the sale. We agreed it was the right thing to do. The sale was cancelled and we moved on. I would have still let them cancel it even if the "mistake" was a really low price. I am thinking long term because I have bought from the before and would like to again. A relationship of trust. Communication and honesty is key.

I also had a seller cancel a sale, because they had already sold the piece at a show that weekend. It sucked but I can't really blame them -- I wouldn't expect them to separate their inventory (online vs. in-person) or monitor every sale and adjust their inventory instantly. Okay, maybe they could, but it's a lot of work and they have to maximize exposure if they want to sell more. Although I "bought" the piece on ebay, this seller also happens to be my LCS -- I've been to their store a number of times, bought a few things, had them send in some pieces for grading/reholdering, before and after this non-sale. I believe their explanation. It's just not very convenient to get to their shop, and the coin I "bought" wasn't even at their shop at the time -- it was at a show.

I'm working very hard to keep this transaction failure civil. I really want the coin and hope to get it at a fair price.

You can always ask the Seller what he thinks is a fair price and go from there. Maybe y'all can work out a deal. (All within ebay's guidelines of course!)

Quote: Are sellers able to cancel a sale for no reason? Are they allowed to after the auction ends? No. Do they? Yes Are there any consequences from ebay for doing so? No.
