Hello All,

I have this coin in my collection but I can't find an match yet. Therefore I was wondering if any off you collectors happen to know this piece.

I thought about Savoie due to the Moon (crescent) in the middle. The few lyrics alround. And also 2 other moons in the lyrics alround.
On the reverse there is also a moon in the top right in the cross part.

I believe it could be a Savoie or perhaps an Medieval crusader coin? It is billion and has the same size as a denier tournois.

I've tried to make out the legends, but they are worn just enough to make it difficult.
With help here, I recently identified a medieval crusader coin of mine, that had GVI DVX ATENE around the cross, but yours does not appear to have this. My guess for the obverse letters starting at 12:00 are G ? I L V M (orH) D V N. So, William Duke N___ comes to mind?
For reverse, I am having more difficulty. Looks like R H or n H at 5:00-6:00. As you say, maybe the crescents will help someone to identify.

Hope someone else will take a look and have an idea

@vince, wow this was a tough one, but I'm quite sure that I've found it after spending a couple hours in my Roberts.
It looks like your coin is from the Commune of Chateaudun issued under the authority of Geoffrey V (1215-1235 AD). Your orientation on the obv is correct and the inscription is +CATRVMDVNI. For the rev, you need to rotate the picture by 90 degrees counter-clockwise (so that the crescent is concave facing up) and the inscription is GAVF RID (starting at the 7 o'clock position). It can be attributed as Roberts 4352.

Added: here is a link to a similar denier for sale on ma-shops:

Hey Spence, I have to say. Amazing how you did this! It is indeed the same one.
Pretty scarce type though.... Also the one on MASHOP. Would be hard for me to transfer these lyrics. You have a specialised book for this?
Wauw!

Worth every denier for the medieval France enthusiast! If you do pick it up, be sure to purchase the accompanying price list from Allen Berman.
