...can the half dollar coins be easily removed from the packaging or will doing so damage it?

They can be easily removed from the packaging without damaging. The capsules sit in a collar secured by a friction fit. There is a little cutout in the side to get your finger into, and you can help the capsules out with a gentle push from the back side if needed.

So this came today, just waiting on a couple of saucers. A long wait at that.
Excellent!

I know I've been referring to the 5 oz. Apollo coins as saucers but as soon as I opened the box the first thing that popped into my head was domed chrome hubcap. These coins look even better in person than I imagined. It's a winner in my book no matter the mintage and cost.

The capsule for the saucer is 3/4 inch think. The slabs will probably be that thick or thinker.

Thanks Teach for posting pics of 5 ounce. I got mine too. Looking close, my plastic capsule has some light scratches on the front. I don't buy a lot of new coins from the mint. Maybe this is normal and I'm being too picky but I wonder if I should send it back for another? The coin is fine.

If the scratches are just on the capsule (and they're really light), you can probably buff them out with Plast-X (or a similar product). That's done wonders for some of my slabs. If the scratches are too deep, it won't do a perfect job but it will still be an improvement.

Alpha2814,
Thanks, I've heard of that product but never tried it. Since this is a new coin I don't think I want to buy Plast-X and take the time to try and fix it. I might make it worse.

One good thing about the 5 oz coin is you get a much better value paying $22.49 per ounce silver. The Apollo 11 $1 proof silver is $54.95 I think for .859 oz of silver.

Got my half sets today. Love these. That curved coin is kinda tricky to photograph- had to change up the lighting quite a bit between the obverse and reverse shots.

Came home to a note from UPS on my door. Have to wait until tomorrow to get mine.

How does the enhanced reverse Kennedy compare to last year's reverse?

Just call the mint tomorrow see if you can get another capsule sent to you or call some big boy dealers and ask if you could buy a capsule for it from them

The five ounce coin is about 45 dollars an ounce if you are looking at it for silver, but these clearly aren't bullion coins so the silver ounces don't really matter
