I've had this in my lockbox for a long time. I'm not sure what type of coin it is. Can someone help me out?

This purports to be a Spanish Cob coin, but I don't believe it's genuine.

Attractive "coin" in nice shape - too good to be true. Looks cast to me.

I have a colonial dollar in similar shape - and its counterfeit in every way :(

The coin has the design used in Bolivia and has the three digit date 736 which translates to 1736. The large 8 at the top indicates it is an 8 Reales - one of the Pieces of Eight from pirate stories. Even though most of the pirates were already dead by 1736 you could still call this a "pirate" type coin. These hand hammered coins were called cobs. They were created in the colonies of Spain to conveniently ship silver to the homeland.

The cob coinage of Potosi and the other colonial mints is very popular with collectors but they have been copied as souvenirs for decades.

What you have is a "Tourist" type example that you could/can find in Florida and at tourist stands on the islands. The majority contain no silver and are therefore curios. If you have a grandchild give it to them and tell them it is "pirate money".

Yep, this "1736" cob is very widely reproduced. They were even selling them at Disney World at one stage (and they might still be doing that). The design actually replicates an 8 escudos gold coin of the period. See this old thread for more examples, and a link to a company that makes them and sells them for $20 each.
