Hi there guys!I've got stuck a bit with a recent research on two items and I'm hoping to get some opinions from you.The first item looks like a restrike of a thaler/medal from the Schwyz canton but I couldn't find out if there is actually a real coin or medal that inspired it.The second one makes me even more curious since it resembles a thaler klippe,1623,of
Rottweil. The one mentioned in the catalogue is a 1-1/4 klippe, weighting 39.33gr,but this one weights 51.95.Could this be a 1-1/2 thaler?I tend to believe that it's more like a fantasy/later cast copy of the real deal!Really looking forward to hear your thoughts!

Because the first one is dated 1972 - it is obviously modern. I would classify it as a modern fantasy whether or not it copies an older original coin or medal. Who made or sold it I do not know. Definitely worth a few dollars over melt.

The second piece I have seen before. I believe I may actually own one that is very close to identical that is someplace in storage. I know I paid $5 or 10 for the one I have. It came in a large collection of fakes that I bought about 5 years ago.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - bad unless you intentionally collect counterfeits like I do.

On the Schwyz fantasy thaler, the reverse appears to be based on the St. Martin scene and legends of this 1550 thaler:

I think the other side is based losely on the wildman designs from Brunswick, some distance away in both time and place.

Just a thought.

swamperbob Thank you very much for your input!First of all none of the items are mine! The design of the first one, which looks like a thaler to me,really caught my eye, but as stated above,i couldn't find a genuine piece yet.The second one belongs to a coin dealer that I know, who has no clue about what this item might be.I suspected the klippe is not genuine and your opinion basically closes the case!

tdziemia It seems that Schwyz has only two thalers,1565(ND) and 1653,both issues having St Martin on the rev.I did found the 1550 one(Uri, Schwyz und Nidwalden)yesterday, when I decided to investigate, but I'm still clueless to be honest!Thank you for your time!

It was very popular in Germany to make copies of the thalers, all in silver. sometimes miniature versions. Sometimes banks distributed them.

In all cases, they were marked with a date, and/ or a fineness mark, so there was no real chance of them being confused with the often rare originals. I have a number of these are they are quite attractive.
