Okay, I did some research on
Magician's coins and how they are made. So, further investigation is necessary.
I tried the ring test, and it passed. It sounds just as solid as any other largie, and gives a ring when flicked.
The coin is 2 grams light for a braided hair cent. You can see here that the coin is too small in both diameter and thickness. So, clearly something is up.

1847 side of coin shows no signs of a seam at 150 Magnification.

1848 shows no signs either.

The edge shows a hint of something at 20 X magnification.

A bit more suspicious at 35X

50 X

100X

150X

200X

230X

So, yeah, I got a bit carried away with the images, but color me impressed with the workmanship.
So I guess someone ground the reverse off of two coins, bonded them together somehow, and then likely ground the rim of the coin to get a smooth seam.
I'm shocked at how good this is done. However, I'm most shocked at the fact that the two faces are offset by about 90 degrees. Who would go through all that trouble, with such attention to detail, but have the heads offset? Baffling.
