Has anybody ever seen something like this? I've never been able to find any information. It clearly has a lot of wear, so its nothing particularly recent. A bit light for a braided cent.

27mm and 8.1 grams.

@jadey, can you please show a pic of the edge of this coin? Thx. We see old Magician's coins with an edge seam (as opposed to the newer ones where the seam is along the rim on one side).

Oh, so Magic coin is a real thing? Sorry, I thought it was a joke.

The edge of the coin is completely smooth. No discernible markings. 1.9 mm thick.

Just found a magic coin on ebay.

Can you provide a link for some specifics?

However made, clearly a Magician's coin with basically novelty value.

@jadey, if you use the search box in the upper left hand part of your screen with the keywords Magicians coin, you will find dozens of CCF threads with these items. Some of them contain links to how they are made and where you can buy them.

Yours is well made and seeming old--after all, who would burn two perfectly good large cents to make one of these nowadays? I agree that there is no numismatic value to this piece, but I'd bet you would find a buyer on ebay for an item like this. I would tuck it away in a 2x2 for safe keeping.

Okay, I did some research on Magician's coins and how they are made. So, further investigation is necessary.

I tried the ring test, and it passed. It sounds just as solid as any other largie, and gives a ring when flicked.

The coin is 2 grams light for a braided hair cent. You can see here that the coin is too small in both diameter and thickness. So, clearly something is up.

1847 side of coin shows no signs of a seam at 150 Magnification.

1848 shows no signs either.

The edge shows a hint of something at 20 X magnification.

A bit more suspicious at 35X

So, yeah, I got a bit carried away with the images, but color me impressed with the workmanship.

So I guess someone ground the reverse off of two coins, bonded them together somehow, and then likely ground the rim of the coin to get a smooth seam.

I'm shocked at how good this is done. However, I'm most shocked at the fact that the two faces are offset by about 90 degrees. Who would go through all that trouble, with such attention to detail, but have the heads offset? Baffling.
