When I visited Ottawa earlier this year, I went to the Mint store with a local friend, who wasn't a coin collector. We went there because we couldn't find any other things to do.
When we saw the ultra high relief moon mask gold coin, both of us were amazed by the beauty. I started to take pictures with my iPhone. Out of nowhere, a stuff took that coin out of the glass shelf and passed it to us! How dare he thought we could afford it!
We looked at this coin closely and took more pictures. Then we left.
On our way back, we were still talking about that coin. Then I told me friend, if you like this coin so much, you should buy it. So we went back to the mint store.
The stuff that showed us the coin is gone. Had he stayed, he would have been proud of us. The store had two remaining such coins. Both were stunning. I helped my friend to pick one, which was flawless.
When I was back to Montreal, I was still checking that coin on mint website daily. One week later, I had to return a silver coin. The phone agent was polite. After he handled my return request, he said, I see you like rare coins from your order history; we have this moon mask gold coin that you really shouldn't miss - and it's the last one. What? I just checked the
RCM website that day; it said 90% sold. How come this is last one? I hadn't planned to buy it though. Nevertheless, I placed the order with him.
The
RCM website declared it's out of stock the second day.
When I received the coin, I saw a 0.5 cm scratch and immediately returned it. My new representative couldn't get me a replacement. At one point, he said it's ok to miss that coin. It's just a regular gold coin; no new technology etc, he said.
Since my new representative wasn't super enthusiastic about that coin, I had to find it myself. Finally, I got one from Canada Post. And it's flawless.
