Light angle and slight MD is what your seeing. Too low of angle makes the edges of the devices reflective. The light source is better above the coin. Also a secondary light source can create unwanted lighting. How to test for this? Try enclosing your hands around the coin to find light direction, then block it. (Can be as simple as a facial tissue and a piece of tape. Paper, books or anything to prevent the unwanted lighting.

I purchased an ultraviolet hand held flashlight for about $5.00. Every time I suspect and flaw in lettering or dates, the UV light eliminates lighting effects and give you a very good reflective surface of what is actually there and not reflections or color variations.

I'm not sure if this would be of any help, but here it is. It's my thread that I created on Machine Doubling. http://goccf.com/t/332421

Looks like Machine Doubling. Devices reduced in size with flat shelflike doubling.
