It looks like a visual anomaly... your brain wants to make sense of it and it does appear to mimic the S mint mark...

I have seen a few things similar to this... made me look twice or study it closer.

I think it is just PMD... ;)

On the mint mark, I can see a scratch, which would be Post Strike Damage ( PSD).

Definitely an S mintmark, but the line going SE of the mintmark is post minting damage ( PMD).

Just like the coin damage, the gouge is into the coin, the edges of the gouge moves the metal upwards. All PSD. Just like snow, when it is pushed it makes a raised area somewhere else.
