I have a collection that includes every penny from 1857-2008. total is 358 pennies. what should I do first, should I get an appraisal or just sell to highest bidder on ebay?

Short answer: get an appraisal.

I know it's tempting to throw it up on ebay and be done with it, but there is no way you will realize as much without knowing more about what you have...It sounds like a fantastic collection, I know we would love to see more of it and could provide an informal evaluation and some advice on how best to have it valued and to break up (lot) the items so that you can realize the most if you decide to go the ebay route. I don't know what your ebay experience is, but if you don't want to be disappointed I don't recommend just selling the whole collection at once. Lots of very knowledgeable and experienced people on this board who will be willing to help however they (we) can.

Welcome!

Having a collect appraised is very time consuming and depending on the size may be very costly. How many coins are in your collect other then the cents and what denomination? ebay can be your best bet, but you do need to know a ballpark of the value so you can get your best price.

Dop you have an approximate for the grades of the older coins ?

1857-1960 most of the cents past that unless they are very high grade do not demand a great deal of premium ,but the earlier ones dependant on the dates mint marks and grades could be pretty spendy in todays market , especially if you have the 1909-s VDB and the 1909-S the 1914-D and the 1922 no D coins there are others in the wheat series that carry a nice premium also ,,and then in the indians the 1908-S and 1909-S as well as the holy grail of the indians the 1877 .

Id say right off the bat you would get over $1000, especially if you have the rare ones in good condition like metalman listed above

Yes, that is an awesome list of dates and I'd love to see some pics, it's quite likely that you'll get the most for them overall by breaking up the collection and selling the keys separately, but it's impossible to give an overall estimate without knowing more...

for example, which reverse is the 1922-no D? That will make a huge difference in estimating/appraising.

If your serious about selling the entire collection you should really sit down and estimate what you have monitarily. Get yourself a Red Book as a starter. Most prices are on the high side but will give you an idea. Make a list with possibly prices for each coin and then just add it up. Remember that you will probably only get about 75% of what you think or estimate. If there are any coin stores in the area you may want to try having them estimate the collections value. Just don't say it's for selling, just for insurance purposes or they will give you the lowest prices imaginable. For insurance purposes they would probably go about 25% more than actual in value. Probably the best thing to do is sell the entire collection at one time since many, many of the coins are not really to valuable and attempting to sell them one at a time would take forever.

Yeah, curious to see what condition these coins are in. The key dates alone could be worth tens of thousands in VF+.
Post some of the keys on the board and we can start estimating value.

Selling an entire collection to a collector, who will pay more, is tough since they are often down to just needing the keys. In my experience, coin dealers are more willing to buy a whole collection because they know they can part it out and sell the keys for more. The problem with selling to a coin dealer is that they will give you a minimum. Unless time is a factor, why not do their job and realize a greater profit?

Where did the set come from? Did you do it all? inherited? Family members?...

If it is yours then you most likely have an idea what it is worth and can start from there. Personally, I would avoid ebay as much as possible on a complete set like this and start hitting dealers. Find someone that will do an evaluation for a descent price and take personal pictures of the complete set. With the advances in the Internet and ease to post your images for free, you can create a small picture gallery and direct dealers and others to it. Look at other dealers than just the local ones and see what they will offer as well. A fair amount of people will want to break it up just for certain dates but I think you should get a better price with it all together.

One more question: why are you selling it? This is an amazing collection and something I personally am striving for. I can not imagine getting it all together and then selling it off. Another idea would to be that you get your 50 posts in on this board and try selling it here. If the price is right someone here will gladly pay for it or most likely know someone that will. It is one thing buying a complete set, but three with errors is unheard of.

I found a coin dealer who is going to give me a written appraisal. I want to sell all together and will see what they say. May still list on ebay. Don't want the hassle of selling seperate.

It would be interesting to see what the dealer offers you. I'm certain you would get more doing it other ways, but if you want the money now, you want the money now. The offer you receive from a dealer will probably be ridiculously low compared to the coins' value, but as long as you don't think you'll have any regrets about what could have been, you gotta do what you gotta do.

WoW !!

That IS an impressive collection!!.....too bad you don't want to keep it !!...

And I agree....part it out for the most dollar value......the written appraisal will be interesting to see for this if you'll share.
Grades are definately important with these.....
