Just a neat little pickup. I didn't have any counterstamped V nickels in my collection, and now I have one.

I lost the bidding on a counterstamped Half Dime (that sold for decent money) so this was a nice consolation prize for much less money.

The underlying coin looks to be mid-high VF range. The stamp itself reads "C. W. M."

I agree! Any thoughts on whose initials those are?

Not a clue. Unless someone has attributed it before (Brunk, etc.) it's probably a maverick like a lot of "initials only" stamps seem to be.

Yep ... This one does appear to be a maverick. I've long contemplated putting together a counterstamped set of Liberty nickels. However, these late 1800's sets are tough because counterstamping became an increasingly uncommon practice, during and following the Civil War. The mintmarked nickels would be the toughest to find; this, as I've seen virtually all others. Then too, the vast majority of those I've seen bear simple initials. Pieces to which I can attach some history are the ones that scream "buy me!" A 7070 album could reasonably be filled with counterstamps, but I don't much care for the modern pieces.

I need a counterstamped Seated 1/2 dime, dime, quarter; 3 cents (silver/nickel); 20 cents; Barber dime/quarter/half. That will give me a mostly complete 1800s type coin set of counterstamps excluding Bust issues and gold.

Unfortunately, the bidding always seems to go very high on Seated counterstamps, and I've never seen one on 3 cent issues or the Barber coins yet, much less a 20c.
