Really looking for a second opinion on this coin...
I've handled only a few of these coins and know how good some fakes can be and one thing I'm not good at is spotting them from photos..
I was about to buy this coin then had a sudden ...
Any thoughts gratefully received Thanks ...Paul
Weight: 7,75 g.
Diameter: 26 mm.
Is-This-8-Anna-Genuine? Is-This-8-Anna-Genuine?

Here also is the second coin I was looking at...its 25% more expensive than the one above but I'd go for it if real and the one above isn't...Thanks

I have no expertise with this type, but based on the explanation you gave on another thread for the "wood grain" pattern in the metal, I would think this would be very difficult to fake?

I realize the first example has sharper details, but I find that wood grain very visually distracting.

Thanks tdziemia...Another collector has just said the same thing...

I must admit I personnally feel the top coin is real...The rim looks good and general overall wear looks quite uniform..Style of portrait weight and size fit...You probably understand I just haven't got it in my hands to be sure!
Maybe I'm just being over cautious ?

As for the second coin the photos are not great and the portrait seems to have more wear than the legend and there is no weight or size given...Saying that the darker toning/dirt around the legend seems to match that around the elephant, top of crown and also the reverse.Edge has a few more small nicks but again looks ok?

Hopefully other experts will jump in..Thanks again Paul

The copper nickel 8 Annas is always a hard denomination to find. After many years of searching, I finally got one for myself.

The silver Half Rupee was the preferred denomination.

I can understand why they would be faked.

Unfortunately, Krause does not supply information on weight for these.
From what I have found on Google, the weight range for these is
7.77 grams to 7.82 grams, so that 7.75 grams is reasonable, when allowance for wear is made.

The coins as shown on my screen look a little 'pasty', but I do not think that is anywhere enough to say 'fake'.

Palouche In my opinion, both coins are genuine. The coloration which looks odd is natural for some copper nickel coins. The alloy is reactive and often discolors. So I would discount that.

This could be target for Numismatic Forgery but I am not aware of anything but crude contemporary cast copies.

Personally I prefer the first coin. The second one has been rather harshly cleaned - you could always acid treat the first coin and still end up with a coin superior to the second one.

Thanks guys! Thats put my mind at rest...

I will go for the first one and when it arrives I'll post some better photos of how the wood grain looks...

Sounds nasty! Can you give me some more information on this treatment?

Thanks again...Paul
