how did I do what? load a big picture or take a close up? for loading I use photobucket which lets you load photos of any size. to get a close up I chose the macro (close up) setting on my digital camera and held a magnifying glass over the lens.
photo ninja LOL!!

well if you are interested in varieties on the cents. coppercoins.com is a pretty good site that you can search by year, mint or variety type. Shows really good images to help you learn what you are looking for. Unfortunately, the varieties for the 1930 didnt come with many images so I am not sure what I have.

Some coins have a heavy/deep mint stamp on them causing a crater around the mint mark. And that's where the dirt collects. Does it show anything on the reverse? Strike through?

I agree with MorgansRmine, just a regular deep set mint mark, and I use an old SOFT tooth brush to clean up around the letters and mint mark, practice on coins that you know have no premium value. John1

I am also in agreement with the fact that it was a deep punch into the die. Normal wear causes the "dirt" to fill in around it. It is a very normal looking 1930 D cent.
Thanks, Bill
