Interesting... This design was used in the 2002 $5 hologram silver coin.

Is it me or has that loonie been rendered as if to resemble a phoenix rising from the ashes? as the island behind it looks like it's on fire with the tree tops looking like the tongues or flames of a fire and the sand having a golden, fiery hue. Nice..

New-Loonies-Are-Out-There

Interesting also to note that it was called the "Landing Loon coin.."

Hi NumisMattyUk,

I hope you don't mind if I take your description and put it in my album. Very good description. Thanks.

Has anyone came across the common loonie for 2008, all I've managed to find is the Olympic loonie this year.

NO!

I've had no difficulty getting fresh-from-the-mint circulation rolls from the banks of all the new coin releases this year but I have yet to see a 2008 common loonie either!

Yesterday I picked up a few rolls of all 6 Cdn coins and found precious little of interest, except for a nice, red AU-50 1968 Cdn cent!!

Does anyone know when Cdn common loonies are due out?

OK here's the answer: I just called the Royal Cdn Mint in Ottawa and they say the '08 normal loonie was put into circulation 2-3 weeks ago, about the same time as the lucky loonie. She said you should specify this at the bank, i.e. not the usual old rolls but the new ones that just arrived in a box. I'll pop in there tomorrow AM and see if they have them.

I still haven't found the lucky loonie in my change (here in BC). It seems our Beijing athletes haven't yet found them either. :)

At two branches of the Royal Bank this AM I could not get any 2008 common loons. Both said they had the latest Lucky Loonie but they were not aware if they had any common loons in stock and refused to check their lucky loonies to see if any rolls of common loons came from the mint, despite the fact there were no lineups and I am a RBC customer. One branch just shoved two rolls of old loonies at me and said "they could not guarantee if any 2008's were in them", but I could clearly see through the plastic they were all older coins. So much for their big customer service drive.

Incredibly, out of 50 loonies there was not ONE single commemorative! Collectors/hoarders have been busy. Here's what I found:

1987: 11
1988: 7
1989: 9
1990: 4
1991: 1
1992: 0
1993: 1
1994: 2
1995: 3
1996: 1
1997-2001: not issued
2002: 0
2003: 0
2004: 0
2005: 2
2006: 1
2007: 8
2008: 0

If anyone spots the '08 common loons, please say where they're coming out...? Tim Hortons maybe?
