If new and just starting out your best bet is to put your coins in folders or albums by date and mint .and keep upgrading your coins in these books as you find them .

Are the coins loose, or are they already in 2 x 2 holders?
Many collectors put their 2x2 holders in vinyl pages. Or in boxes that can hold the 2 x 2 in a row.

Currently I'm putting in small zip lock bag and label individually.
I've ordered some 2x2 holder online but still waiting for it to arrive.
But should I put all the coin collections on 2x2? Or only if it's rare error or variety?

If your using 2x2's in a binder. I suggest you not staple them yet or write on them. This way you can swap out the coin when you find a better one and not waste the 2x2. Also Because they will stay in the book and not fall out on the floor when tipped. (Been there did that) I cut a 2x2 piece of paper to label that page and put it in the conner square. to our Happy Group Only put your better ones in a book. Keep the rest and doubles in the zip lock bags. I use small empty bottles in a bigger box.

Well, I like all my coins to be as similar as possible, so I put all of mine in flips, then in binders. In the binders I have the coins organized by country, denomination, date, mint, and then by catalog # if there is a further variation such as different design or material. But I don't collect multiples of the same coin, so if you do that system may not be to your liking.

As with most things, it really comes down to personal preference. I like to look at my coins hence I like to have them on display and easily accessible. This is what I've found works for me. I put each of 'best' coins in a stapled 2x2 (I use staples rather than self adhesive so that I can carefully remove the staples if I find the same coin in better condition). These 2x2's are stored in an order in 20 pocket holders which are held in PVC free 3-ring folders. Any copies of a coin that I wish to keep are kept in small zip lock bags. The only exception to this are my $2 coloured/commerative coins and 1966 round 50c which I keep in Lighthouse Numis coin pages. Here are a few examples: Australian pre-decimal and decimal coins are ordered by year in each denomination. Spare $2 and 50c coins storage Error coins for a particular denomination World coins alphabetically listed by country (just about to start writing the KM# on each 2x2). Apologies for the orientation of the photos ... tried everything but couldn't get them to show the correct way up!

Wow Coaster, your collections really looks neat and impressive.
Does your coins fall off if you don't put it in a 2x2 cardboard?

Thanks for the kind comments both Lionel90 and Charl. Quote: Does your coins fall off if you don't put it in a 2x2 cardboard? If you are asking about 'spare $2 and 50c coins storage' the answer is no. With this system there is an inner sleeve that slides into an outer skin so it's impossible for the coins to fall out.

Since firs starting out you should simply sort out the same types first. Then I suggest putting them in 2x2 flips at least for now. Then look into those Whitman type, two row cardboard boxes to hole them. When there is enough of one type, acquire an Album and transfer them into the album. I do this all the time. Not to difficult to keep track of how many of each type you have.

Ah I see, I think the one I bought online is without the inner sleeve. Will buy that in the future. Also can't wait for my 2x2 to arrive so I can try sorting it out.
Another question I need to ask is how do you decide what coins to keep? I'm trying to keep most of the error or variation coins I find at the moment worrying that I might accidentally bank in any valuable coins.
Does anyone have any complete list of type, variation and error on Australian coins that I can refer to?
Thanks

I currently have coins all over my desk I know the feeling - heaps of stuff from change to be sorted... I generally put the good stuff in 2x2s/saflips and the rest gets bagged up (I figure it's not worth wasting money on 2x2s/saflips for junk).

Just received my 2x2, will try to arrange my collections By the way Coaster, I notice that you manage to collect so many of the same $2 coloured coin. How did you manage to collect so many of them?
