If you are unsure of your grading skills only buy a certified note with eye appeal. There is no shortage of nice $1 saddle blankets to pick from.

This is far and away the most common of the large size notes. You can find a nice certified one in 63 or so for under $200.

The grading terminology is subject to discussion. To me, UNC means without folds and may have minor handling marks. Choice Uncirculated or Choice Crisp Uncirculated is the next step up and typically would grade 63-64 *PQ. The next step is GEM or GEM Crisp Uncirculated, almost identical to CCU but with better centering and registration. Typical grades would be 65-66 *PQ. Everything north of this is called Superb GEM Uncirculated, grades 67,68,69 and 70 *PQ. It's really tough telling some of these apart, so if you can't see the difference, don't pay the difference.

I agree with westernsky and will add, the 1923 $1 Silver Certificate is readily available in all grades. Be patient, and look for an XF or AU example with original paper qualities and good eye appeal. This tends to be the sweet spot (price/quality) for this series.
