It was minted between 1895 and 1907. Weigh it to make sure it is real, as many of these coins are fakes. It should wight 26.7g. I don't really like the look of the words, makes it a fake piece?

On the side with the dragon, there are one characters on both sides, but the Krause book does not list that one, probably a fantasy piece?

I don't have a scale to test it -- should I just assume that it's a fake?

From the look of it -- soft letters and grainy fields - It's certainly a modern fake.

Looks bad to me: weak letters, and grainy background.

The proliferation of fake Chinese dollars has ruined them as collectables; you have to source them from dealers who really know what they're doing with Chinese coins if you want a good chance of picking up an original.

Coins like this are imported by the containerload from China. You can probably buy them for a couple of dollars each down at the local flea market. Any you see down there are 100% fake.

Even here people are selling that in lots of 8, 10, 20 or even 50.
Surprisingly enough, there almost always are buyers! And so the circle of deceit continues.

That's exactly how I got this, luckily I didn't lose a lot of cash.
