Can someone post, or is there a list somewhere already, of each coin denomination and what you should be saving out of each one? US coins: penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar.

Example - Nickles: save anything before 1960, war nickles (1942-1945), Buffalo nickles, shield nickles, etc.

It's really up to the person. PERSONALLY, I keep all wheat cents I find, all 2009 coins, varieties and errors for pennies. For nickels, I keep 1959 and earlier, but many here only keep 1955 and earlier. I also keep 2009 Nickels. For dimes, it's 2009's, proofs, varieties, errors, and silver for me. I don't personally hunt quarters so I'll differ on that front. Half Dollars are fairly universal, silver, NIFC's (Not Intended for Circulation 2002-Present), proofs, varieties, and errors. This is all my practice and should be taken for a grain of salt if it doesn't apply to you, but it will maximize your results. Consider purchasing a copy of the CherryPickers Guide to aid in your search, it has a detailed list of varieties and error you can look for in your hunts. That being said, if you decide to use the CCF Affiliate links on the side of the screen in green, it helps keep the forum free.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the book reference. I was going to ask you what you mean by proofs, varieties, and errors? And how do you recognize them when you're looking at a coin?

A proof looks very different then a normal business strike coin. They have frosted devices and a mirrored field. They usually bear an S mint mark of they are post 1968 but not all S mint coins are proofs. Variaties are defined as differences in a coins appearence or features. Take the 1955 DDO Cent as an example. If you buy a copy of cherrypickers you'll see some. If you're interested, I'd be more then happy to mail you a proof so you can get an idea of what to look for.
