Someone spent a LOT more slabbing that coin than it's worth.

Even if it were a $10 submission ,they still lost money on that $1-$2 coin .

There are other reasons to slab besides money. There are other reasons to collect coins besides money.

There would be no reason to waste money slabbing a low grade common date coin. If it was the same date but was razor sharp with some of the original red then it might be worth it. But people are free to spend their money anyway they wish.

And goodness knows there's abundant evidence of that!

Sentimental reasons, for one. I have often considered slabbing all the coins I got from my grandfather, to pass down to my children preserved and graded so they're all together and they don't have to figure out grading themselves. It would be worth it as a batch. Picking out one coin and saying "that's not worth it" isn't the point. There are other values besides money.

I can definitely understand someone slabbing for sentimental reasons, or to preserve a coin they consider special. However, submitting just any coin to be slabbed is probably going to end up being a waste of money.
