I was going through some pocket change recently, and found 3 different examples of 2018 P dimes with die damage in the same areas as 2017's, 2016's, and 2015's --- on the reverse torch handle.
Is there something wrong with the rev dies the Philadelphia mint is using ? It's unbelievable how many Cuds and micro cracks there are.
I do not have images of the 2018 batch, but here are 2 variants of the 2017 shown in a previous post I made.

Hello. I'm really not sure. I have one example of a 2014-D dime where the bottom of the torch has 4 or 5 cracks extending out from one pretty large die break/chip right smack in the center. Maybe weak or easily worn dies?

I think I might know why maybe. That area is one of the stress points of the die that can easily crack or chip. On the die, that area in incused, while the fields with no details are not.

Also if the die is not tempered correctly, instead of being tempered, it cooled too soon, it can be brittle. Then it tends to break/crack/chip easier. If you would like to learn about tempering metal here is a link below:

That will give you a better understanding of the process.

Hey Coop, you would think after 250 years of minting coins they would have it down by now. I think the problem is deeper, I think it comes down to efforts to cut the cost of minting coins, and the end product suffers tremendously from it. I'm seriously beginning to think they outsource the minting of coins to China. I have never seen so many variations of quality, clarity of text, and light strikes, vs heavy strikes.
Like I mentioned in a thread I started earlier, If it's dated 1983 or sooner I toss it aside. The quality is seriously very poor.
Why didn't they simply cut the amount of copper in the coins and add another cheaper metal to make up for it ?

@Panther
It seems like someone is cheaping out ... you notice all the die wear on the 2015's P and 2016's P --- most noticeable on obverse?

You have to figure in also, they are not making one die at a time. Hundreds of dies are made at the same time. So the more made at the same time may have different things happen to them during the process. So not tempered the same. In the video, you see that a hands on treatment was necessary. Those dies may have been given a group hug instead of individual attention. Thus some are know to react differently. 2015, 2016 dimes are posted here probably most often with an issue of the dies breaking down quickly or just being over used.

I finally gotten around to taking a picture of a 2018 P ... the image quality is not the best in the world unfortunately
I wonder if the 2019 P will also have this kind of damage ?

That's called a Die Crack. This issue was very common on these newer Dimes.
