I think I have definitively identified a VAM 5B without the dash under the second 8. The reverse retains the Die Scratch below the "DO" in dollar from 5A. Some evidence of starburst at wingtips polished off from the 5A.

Obverse III22- Die polished removing clashed N & T and weakening metal in denticles below 18 and dash below right 8.

Doubled date with die break.

Note the die break above States, and "In God We Trust" is doubled.

This VAM attributing is difficult, but I really have no sense of whether there is any value in it. Have you found any good way to find auction results for VAMS?

I have 3 more of these coins, and two of them appear to be VAMS as well. Another 5B and maybe a 5A. Really hard to tell.

I hope others will offer opinions as well.

Also, I was originally going to just post this for grading, but saw a few things that got me interested. I actually think this coin is MS, but it has been hit HARD by a bunch of other coins, or might have been dropped on a hard rough surface. I wonder how it would grade.

Send it in. I have 3 CCs about the same as yours, sending them to NGC for grading. IMHO I would grade it as a 61/62 but I'm learning. I have not found anyplace myself where attributing it to a VAM number increases value but it is fun trying to figure them out. Glad this is a hobby and not a job, I'd go broke(r) quick(er), LOL. From the lack of replies on here, I figure VAMs are not a big deal, only a couple guys actually replying.

You're not kidding about going broke. It takes a lot of effort to figure them out. Perhaps it gets easier with time. Not sure it will be enough to capture my interest in the long term though.

I figure the same, that VAMS aren't particularly popular in this community.

Thanks for the info. It sounds as though they are not fetching a premium.
