Can you tell if this coin appears to be obviously cleaned? I passed on it, and it ended up going for a bit under market. It almost looks sandblasted. I'd really like to pick up a nice XF example, but original surfaces are one of my prime criteria (along with good strike, etc). Thank you! https://www.ebay.com/itm/1926-S-Mer...362508116985[you just need to scroll down to the listing, since it has ended]

First of all I never liked Bubba Sully's coins on e-bay . A lot of his coins really look funky to me . I agree with IGE on all counts . Wait for the right one to come along .

Thank you all for your comments (and keep 'em coming if others have thoughts as well). Sometimes I can't help having FOMO (e.g., "I just missed a great deal!"). Something about perusing hundreds of 1-dimensional coin photos on ebay, and seeing 90% of those (in a grade I'd even consider) have obvious issues due to over-dipping or intense scouring...I start to second guess my instincts on some of these (e.g., "wait, maybe this coin is legit"). So hearing confirmation on cleaning evidence from you guys is SUPER helpful for me. Thank you! What a shame too, as I would have loved to at least consider a coin like this prior to the baking soda!

Not sure about being cleaned. No tone difference between devices/fields or swirl marks from a polishing cloth. Not that it couldn't have been dipped/soaked and left to air dry. Simply open on the matter. As for the look? I'm leaning towards dots per inch on a scanned image.

Now that is really a crime. Almost full bands and ruined with harsh cleaning. Will never be the same. And that is sort of one of the key's in that series.

Yes Ballyhoo, I see what you mean. I wonder if there is any remaining luster under all the pock marks, as it is so hard to tell from these pics if any luster remains. I feel real evidence of luster in a photo is obvious only if the coin is full of it. Subdued luster seems challenging to capture in a photo in a way that demonstrates true luster not just "shininess". In any event, what about this coin which demonstrates a similar surface feature...I'm not sure if this coin is cleaned. https://www.ebay.com/itm/143005144515
