I figured I would share this amazing story. Yesterday I went to the bank to get a box of nickels. All they had were customer rolls. I generally don't search customer rolls since they are usually picked over and I have been shorted on more than one occasion. I decided to get a hundred dollars worth anyways since I hadn't searched any nickels in a while. I ended up with an amazing 42 War Nickels. (All common dates) So today I rushed back to the bank to get the rest of the customer rolls they had. I found another 143 War Nickels with at least one from every date and mint mark (most were 43P,44P and 45P). I also pulled out a 38D, 42D, 50D, 51S, two dateless Buffalo nickels and a 1889 Liberty nickel (the oldest coin I have found roll hunting). I can't imagine how someone could turn in all these coins to the bank.

Yup. someone cleaned out the attic! Actually, all War Nickels are "common" until you get to Fine/Very Fine grades. No one should ever pay more for a G or VG War Nickel just because it has a lower mintage or whatever - the silver value will probably always outweigh whatever numismatic value it might have. However, a very different story for Unc....

Nice finds on the War Nickels !....... I certainly don't have any in uncirculated condition, but I do have a lot of them....somewhere over 150 of them ! Something about their historical significance, and the silver content.....I like this nickel !... Quote: I ended up with an amazing 42 War Nickels. (All common dates) All of the " War Nickels" are actually "common dates". Unless you have a DDR, or D-eye, or 3 over 2 error. The 43D has a low mintage number, but still very little premium over any other date and still found in good numbers.

Ok, I'm not adding anything to the topic here but... did anyone else notice how depressing and horrible the red sad face is? He looks so sad I think I might have to take the rest of the day off work and go home

I find customer rolled coins the best. They have had less people poking through them and you never know when someone has rolled up grandpa's change jar after he has passed on.

Great finds, someone probably had been collecting for quite some time and then they found their way to you. Keep looking and make friends with those tellers, but don't let them know too much because then they will start looking!

Thanks everyone. I didn't realize the lower mintage War Nickels were still considered "common dates", learn something new every day.

Wow!! Awesome haul!! What do you plan to do with all those War Nickels? After putting aside a nice set for yourself, you could probably trade the rest in for the silver value to your local coin store and get some nice coins for your collection...by my calculations, the silver value for a War Nickel is the most times-face-value that you can find...great way to finance some nice coins if you're on a budget. (This is the main reason I search primarily nickels...lol.)

I went to my bank to get penny rolls today and one of my favorite tellers came running up to the window and said"I'm glad you're here, I was saving this roll for you". It was a whole roll of wheat pennies including a 1919, 1928,1932 ad 1939. Gotta love those kind of tellers!
