I'm new to roll hunting. So far me and my wife have opened 2 boxes of pennies. The first one we found around 20 wheat pennies (nothing exceptional). The second one, she found a 1909 VDB wheat and a 1903 Indian Head penny. Which to me was a great find. I've read several posts about people hunting through half dollar rolls. Do you just go up and ask the teller for rolls? Is it worth searching quarters? Also is it better to just get a box of change from the bank or should I be asking for customer rolled change? Thanks guys.

sometimes it can be best to talk to the bank manager and tell them that you are a collector and want to know if there are any older coin rolls in the vault you can buy. Also getting in good with a teller or two helps cuz they can save any customer rolls that are cashed in. I have heard of some tellers even calling people to let them know they just received some so people can get down there and grab em up.

Out here in Southern California, it's terrible. I have not found one bank that has Half dollar rolls. They tell me the minute they get them, they send them out with Brinks. I did manage to get eight Quarter rolls. Will report what I find. Good luck to all.

You can find "goodies" in BOTH.......no difference.....just some luck your way is all you need. You can get skunked with both "customer wrapped" AND "bank wrapped" too !... Yeah, if it's a bank that you belong to, ask for any halves in the vault that you can buy, and even if there isn't any, you can ask for them to order a box from the Federal Reserve. This should generally be at no cost to you and they come that way in a $500.00 box. Once you look through them.....take them back to that bank or split it up to another branch you belong to. You get them for face value (or I do anyway)......That's one way to have an "endless supply" of halves to go through. Silver in other denominations is a lot less common. It does happen, but that can be exhausting endeavor !... for very little reward.....IMHO...(I'm sure there are others with better luck....but that's generally true I believe) Wheats and IHC's are still out there in rolls as you're finding out. And some have luck with the occasional " War Nickel" or " Buffalo nickel" while searching those.........but dimes and quarters just aren't worth it to me.....don't like the ratio of success there with those !...

A follow-up question.. I've read about 1c, nickel, quarter, half and dollar rolls.. but why is nobody mentioning dime rolls? Are dimes packaged in a different way or have no varieties? Just felt I had to ask about it

I think that most of the pre-'65 dimes & qtrs. are held on to. The unmistakeable " Mercury dime" looks completely different and is easier to spot for people and so they keep em' out of circulation better. The qtr. can slip through if they don't recognize that it's silver if pre'65. '79 has a dime that has a clear and filled "S", but no real premium there......so yeah...post'64 really no varieties....and the pre'65 "Merc's", or older, are just rare to find anymore... so......that's my humble opinion as to why there aren't more dime roll searchers !...

Nope, dimes are in rolls like everything else.
I think dimes and quarters are avoided because they circulate more; the silver and high grade clads are often picked before they get to a roll, thus making the "finds" fewer and farer between.

I'm in Southern Cali as well, and the two branches that I frequent have Half rolls occasionally...I just got $50 worth today. I've searched about $300 in Halves, and only found 1 40% Silver half...so I'm not really that motivated to search Halves. As for dimes, like others have said, silver ones are pretty rare...I've searched a couple boxes ($500 each) and found nothing. If you find a 82 no P that's got quite a premium even in circulated condition, but those are rare. I usually stick with nickels, and will usually find a couple silver War Nickels and about 1 Buffalo and 1 non-US coin per box, so it's been the most rewarding so far. Almost completed my Jefferson set from circulation...just a handful left . As far as what you want to roll-hunt, it really depends on what you like to collect. I started with pennies, and I'll still get those too sometimes (just picked up a box of those too). If you are strictly just searching to find valuable stuff to trade, then I guess pennies, nickels and halves would be your best shot. There are some members here who have been really lucky with halves...I just gotta find out where they live and plunder their banks...lol. j/k

cheungsta brings up a good point: what is the purpose of your searching? If you trying to find rare coins and that is it, then stick with the cents, nickels and halves. If you are doing the above and filling in holes or starting sets, then collect what you want and can afford. Personally, I mainly collect cents and get what I can when I can. Most places have them in loose rolls, boxes of $25 or bags of $50 (which my bank does). They do not order any change because of how much rolled coin comes in the door and they ship off to headquarters and other branches. Every now and then I will get nickels and halves, but I am also slowly collecting these sets as well and not doing it for the silver content (but I do not complain when I find it). I have only been doing this for a few months and feel that I have been fairly lucky, I have found: 3+ 40% silver halves 60+ Wheaties 1 Buffalo nickel1 war time nickel a hand full of varieties and errors This may not sound like a lot but considering I have only gone through $250 in cents, $20 in nickels and about $40 in halves, I feel that I have had a great return. I would suggest trying at a couple of different places as well and see what group of coins turns up better and maybe focus on that branch. It is to your advantage to get to know as many tellers as possible and make your trip rememberable where they know they like you and not dread helping you. In a post I read at one time the person said they took treats in a couple times a month to show how much they appreciated the help and I know this had to come back 10 fold.

Keith Cooner, I don't know if you are looking for Lincoln Cent varieties or not but you should be,thats what I do I am a Lincoln Cent Roll Hound. I go to my local bank and buy four boxes at $25.00 per box. I seem to find more unusual things in hand wrapped rolls then I do in machine wrapped. John1

Great finds! I've searched through 66 rolls and I've found 1 IHC. I usually find a wheat every 4-5 rolls. I've heard that Kennedy's are good to search through. Keep everything pre-1971. The '64s are 90% silver, and the '65s-'70s are 40% silver. And of course keep the Franklins and Walking Liberties. Hope this helps! Sincerely, ~Logan Thomas~
