Surface texture looks a bit 'iffy', especially between the lettering. no mint luster.
Perhaps that is your reason for suggesting 'fake'.

If specs are OK and it checks out well with XRF,
I would be thinking Middle East copy (most probably made in Lebanon), in good quality gold.

I guess that weight would be very close with say, 19ct gold, the manufacturer would meet his manufacturing costs.

It may be worth taking a little further, and taking this item to a scrap gold jewelry buyer hand having it checked for XRF analysis, looking particularly for the proportion of gold vs. copper in the alloy.
A fee for testing may be asked for.

moose59 I too would be very uncomfortable with the way the detail looks on this coin to classify it as a genuine Australian coin. I do not like the "softness" of the detail as well as the dentils.

A half sovereign is a bit small to perform a specific gravity test (you need an analytical balance accurate to 1/1000 the of a gram or better), however, a laboratory level test would tell you if it was gold. Forgeries of these coins were produced in Lebanon to smuggle gold into the US in the 1960s. Gold content varies but can reach 0.999 fine. These forgeries trade at a couple dollars over melt.

I agree overall softness of reverse...and sword lines over rump of horse..Fake...Here is a side by side comparison with a real coin...But saying that working only on photos especially with gold can be difficult...

Really need better pics to give a proper opinion.
However my guess is that its genuine and has been polished or similar.

Also I cant see a mintmark so its British.

Fake as in real gold such as made in Lebanon (still OK to own for gold content and as a talking piece) or fake as in plated cr@p sold by scammers?
