My wife and I attended the Indiana State Numismatic Association 60th annual coin show last weekend. I've been to small 10-20 table shows before, but this one had close to 100. First thought was "this is bigger than I expected." We did a lap around the whole room before deciding on what to inspect closer. We liked one seller in particular, well laid out easy to inspect trays of coins, with prices listed. I didn't stop at any tables with no prices, I don't know quite enough to feel confident in dealing with that. My goal was to get a new oldest coin in my collection (accomplished, twice!) Now that I know more of what to expect, next year we will be better prepared. Our low budget was gone way too fast, so we'll have to work on having a bigger one next time.

I will say that all but one or two of the sellers were very polite, even seeing us looking through low dollar stuff. I saw plenty of gorgeous, super expensive coins (1955 DDO LWC!) and lots of gold and silver, coin and bar. It was a great experience, already looking forward to next year.

Those wondering what we got, keep an eye on the next few Guess the Price seasons.

If your in Indiana you should look into the Countryside, Il. coin shows. On the far South side of the Chicago land area. Usually from 50 to 80 dealers. Every 2nd Sunday of every Month. If you get there early enough, free coffee and donuts. free parking and admittance.

One thing about going to big shows, you just never seem to have enough money with you.

Glad to hear it was a positive experience. I would love to get to a sizable U.S. show. I'm thinking the Gold and Silver Expo in April put on by the The Buffalo Numismatic Association. It's probably the closest for me. Given that I probably won't be going to one of these any more than once/year, I have to make sure I have a decent sized budget!

The Indiana State show is a pretty decent mid size show (just wait till you get to a BIG one). I was there all day on Friday, picked up three new Conder Tokens, had a nice discussion withthe ANA rep there and a couple long discussions withthe ANACS rep about ANACS history and the early certificates. My father and I had both spent our budgets though so we didn't come back on Saturday. One nice thing about this show is they have a nice YN auction. Usually 80 or so kids attend and each one is give a few hundred "dollars" they can use to buy items in the auction. Items are donated by collectors and dealers and there can be some really nice things in the sale. In the past I have seen gold pieces, platinum, semi keys and even key coins. Didn't get a chance to see what was donated this year but I do know there was a 1742 german states wildman 24 groshen piece in maybe F to VF in the sale. Probably about a $150 or better coin. And of course anything the YN's buy at the auction they get to keep. Can be interesting to watch and see how they start developing startagies to get what they want. Oh and parents are not allowed to coach except for the very youngest ones (5 or 6 year olds say)

I'm still waiting to go to my first real coin show. Hopefully in February I'll be able to go to one here in St. Louis.
