@QH72, this one certainly has several interesting colors. As you know more about this stuff than I do, I wonder if you can explain how this coin might have toned naturally? With the level of normal wear and tear, I think that this nickel must have spent a bunch of time in circulation. Do you think that it got pulled out of circulation at one point and then toned and then got put back into circulation? Again, I'm not trying to throw shade on your post, just wondering how things happen. Thx!

I'm not experienced at all with toning, so I have no idea! Sorry, I'm not the person to ask for this kind of stuff!

Unnatural asymmetric toning from some (probably random) environmental exposure. Banged up, just don't see a premium here.

Ok thx. I struggle to see the difference sometimes between natural toning and AT.

So this is artificial toning?

I can only think that if I was going to experiment with AT, I'd pick a better cadaver than this.

I'm sorry I'm still confused, is this or is it not artificial toning. Is it natural or man made? Just trying to clarify.

Quote: I struggle to see the difference sometimes between natural toning and AT. Because it is pointless. Toning is not a binary issue. Toned coins exist on a continuum from really bad to really nice and everything else in between. A better description is whether the toning is market acceptable or not. Some types of toning have a very large market. I suspect this coin's is quite limited. It is interesting and while you might find a buyer, I doubt they would pay a worthwhile premium for it.

That being said, keep it if you like it. It is always fun to keep the interesting things we find along the way. Sentiment does have value .
