Post Your Stories & Pix Of Found Money

Haven't posted in a while, but I think it makes sense to at least do a "greatest hits" post at the end of each month...

I found this wheatie in the worst, most corroded condition I've ever seen in circulation; I figured it doesn't have any value in this sort of nasty shape so I just threw it in my jar. It was one of two wheaties I've found this month; the other was a 1948 in okay condition, not pictured but I'm holding on to it.


On June 13 at about 3:30 PM, I finally found my first coin from 2024! Just a Philly-minted zincoln, but it still counts - and here it is next to a 1987 Swiss 1 Franc coin I found the same day.


I hit another milestone on the evening of June 23 when I saw a rather beat-up, old coin in a Coinstar reject tray and it turned out to be my first silver nickel find! I've found a ton of wheaties, two silver dimes, and a silver quarter, but never a nickel worth anything beyond face value in change or on the street - until this guy here.


My 2024 Philadelphia cent got a buddy from Denver too a couple of weeks later. I don't collect moderns, so both of these guys are sitting happily in my jar right now.


My biggest haul of the month was while I was on the road on June 9 and found $4.26 (four dollar coins, a quarter, and a zincoln) in vending machines at a rest stop in southern Illinois - no picture because it was all in a bag with other finds from the trip, including lots of corroded and heavily damaged cents and nickels from the streets of Mississippi.

Also, on the note of my coin jar - my new apartment has in-unit laundry, so I won't need to set aside quarters as laundry tokens anymore! That means even more of my street stimulus can go directly into my jar and from there into my bank account, where it can earn that sweet, sweet compound interest.

Mr. Pink, I will say I envy that '59 dime find. Both of mine have at least been vending machine rejects; I think there's an extra level of serendipity associated with just finding it in the street.

my monthly totals are not tremendously impressive, but it all adds up. for a solid year (& a few months) the monthly totals are either just above or just below $30, which basically equates to $1/day overall, so it's still working.

I've made a small upgrade worth reporting: I've managed to pick up another paying gig. I'm helping a longtime islander set up & take down her corner hot dog stand downtown two nights a week (three nights this week because of the 4th).

i detest downtown. I don't really enjoy going down there for any reason, but it's quick, easy work, I don't have to stay very long after the setting up, I don't have to sell anything and I get paid $75 at the end of the night. after the setting-up I might sit and watch some of the constant parade of people (which I refer to as The Show), maybe for about ten minutes, and then I've had enough. I get out of there just after 9pm, but I have to be back there by 1:30-1:45am for the take-down, which only takes 15-20 minutes. a bit of a bonus: I get dibs on leftovers. if there are any hot dogs or sausage dogs still on the grill by the time she calls it quits I get to run off with them. they are delicious. this week I discovered that the sausage dogs are perfect for eating along with pasta dishes.

it fits into my nightly schedule with just a minor tweak: I can't spend time biking thru the 3 big parking lots. it takes me 45-60 minutes each night to ride around to those 3 lots & search them. there's not enough time to do those lots on hot dog nights. $75/night works out to an extra $600/month, and that is huge for me. excising the big lots is a fair dinkum trade-off on fridays & saturdays. $75 a night earned is far better than $1 a night found. besides, there are numerous places I can check on my way back to downtown after I get the cats fed. oftentimes those areas produce more pickins than the parking lots, anyway.

it doesn't affect my kitty feeding, either. I head out at the same times & return home at the same times. the cats get fed before I get into too much pickin.

there will be exceptions, I realize, like when it rains. rain wrecks all scheduling for me. it'll be tricky, but i'll cross that bridge when I arrive there.

Dana (the hot dog lady) says that I am working out perfectly for her, so ... but this will not be a forever job; she's been doing this for 30 years and she says she's just about had her fill. she wants to sell her hot dog enterprise. it likely won't happen soon, so I have to grab that cash while it's available.

a good addition to my nightly routine.... but that's still not a pouch of benjamins...

yep, a very decent gig. Dana is very pleased with me. it's not very difficult for me to step into a position and score so high, despite my not wanting to be there. I'm a good communicator. I keep in touch and I follow thru. I'm reliable, dependable, responsible and prompt. I follow instructions, I pick up on things quickly and I'm sober. all of that puts me ahead of the herd by a wide margin.

(i thought i'd reply to this without babbling too much, but...)

i gain a good deal of satisfaction from most of my activities and, yes, I get plenty of exercise... but not just biking; I do a lot of walking and a lot of yard work & horticulture/tropiculture... as much as my lousy back lets me. I did 2 hours of yard stuff today during the hottest time of the day, 2-4pm (the only time I could do it). I'm always sweating. I'm not yet finished sweating today; I still have to ride out for kitties & coins (a very sweaty undertaking), and then I ride off to take down & put away the hot dog rig (more sweat). then I ride for washington street, where I lock my bike & feed a couple more cats... then I sit in the pool to cool off somewhat for about half an hour, drinking ice water, looking at the stars. eventually I go home to Pink. our play time is at the coolest point of the night, the wee hours before sunrise.

i have cats & coins waiting for me everywhere I go.

i didn't find much money last night. I could have stayed out a bit longer & covered more territory, but some kitties didn't show up on time so I opted to go back out to find them instead of hunting for more coins. they were waiting for me in the usual place on my second try.

i don't know what i'll find later tonight when I go out, but earlier this evening some people wandered up to me and insisted on giving me a bunch of food. I think they thought I was homeless. they gave me three 'to-go' platters: a nice salad (all leafy greens), a lot of fresh bread and a rice & veggie plate. I ate a bunch of it about an hour ago.

nice haul, Hondo! i'll never understand why people leave so much change behind. amazing. it pays to be looking around. and a silver dime, too... maybe it's silver dime season?
