What are everyone's thoughts? For me personally I do find coins that are NOT meant for circulation that have been circulated and resurfaced I find them oddly interesting and satisfying. I am assuming this may be a niche niche market. I do consistently see them been sold on ebay, just wondering from here in this forum what are your thoughts?

I have a few SAC and JFK halfs that were not made for circulation. But ended up there which is how I got them. Kind of neat and they end up in one of my books.

I have found a few proof coins over the years. Cool but I don't think they are worth much in circulated condition (unless super rare or silver).

Impaired proof coins found in circulation should be graded and valued in the same way as normal business strike coins. May be worth 'comment' in the grading:- "Impaired proof".

They're nice to find but I don't go hunting for them. Mostly I find dollar coins not for circulation.

yes they are niche market market for these thing depends on buyers. Value it cap a retail prices, only a few coins that you might actually get higher than retail but not that much higher.

Where would you check if your coin was made for circulation or not?

Mr T: Thankyou for the link.
I am fortunate enough to have a complete set of all of the commemorative Australian coins, as strictly issued for circulation. Every one of them was taken from pocket change, for face value. I did not make any particular effort to collect 'Not Issued for Circulation', but I do have a few of those as well.
The strategy that I used to collect them, was to inspect every shiny newly minted coin that came through my hands via pocket change, and put aside the commemoratives without further checking, into a 2 litre jar. That took about 2 years. When the jar was full, I selected the best two examples of each type.
As an aside, I accumulated about $250 un needed commemorative coins, which I returned to circulation. That would be a nice saving for any kid!
Although I am an old man, it is a simple numismatic project that any young kid could very easily attempt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a young child, I was fascinated by the 1951 Jubilee Florin, and the 1954 Royal Visit Florin. When my grandfather gave me a 1927 Parliament House Florin - well, that was something else!
That was what first grabbed my lifetime interest in numismatics.

re the RAM's information of coin mintages : after many many attempts to alert the RAM about their coin mintage site they have not heard me, and no doubt, others over the years. The " pet " stand out coin for me on the RAM's coin mintage site, amongst others, is the 1992 $1 Mob of Kangaroos. I've given up looking for these 1992 $1 MoRs ....

Yeah the 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1988 20c pieces and 1992 $1 are all coins that didn't circulate.

the list of coins " not minted " in the particular years, according to the RAM's own coin mintage site, is long. The RAM's coin mintage site's figures must have been compiled - hic - by their sthaff after thum very - hic - long liquid lunthes. I'm certain that we collectors have at least one 1995 20c platypus....oh, yeah, - hic - 1995 20c platyputh

Over the years I have found these NCLT in change 2004 Eureka Stockade 2006 Anniversary of Television 2001 2 of Centenary of the Army 2010 100 Years of Australian Coinage 1997 Sir Charles Kingsford Smith C mint mark 1998 2 of Howard Florey
My guess is that they are spent after being burgled.
