Hi,
Could you tell me what these marks are? I've seen scratches before but never under the lettering. I tried unsuccessfully researching this and couldn't find anything. Probably because I don't know what terminology to use. I hope my pictures are clear enough. I used my cell phone with a magnifying lens.

A frequently asked question.
They are from a coin counting/wrapping machine.
Type in " Coin Wrapping Machine" in the search forum
at the top of the sidebar for more information.

I searched Coin Wrapping Machine and I saw similar lines but those were on top of the lettering. Mine are beneath. Are you sure that's the cause? If so, why aren't the letters and numbers affected by the machine?

I agree, it is a typical damage cause by the wrapping machine. The damage is more noticeable on top of the Virginia devices.

Ok, thank you. I didn't realize that they were wrapped before the lettering was put on. Learned something new.

It's not that the lettering happened first, it's because the letters are incuse, not raised. On most other coins, the letters are higher than the surface, so they will be affected by the machine.

Not sure what new thing you think you learned. The perimeter devices are incused and a product of the strike.

The scratch / damage actually goes across the fields or surface, which skirts above the letters after strike. Thanks, Doug.

They were wrapped after they were struck. The reason it appears that the lettering goes behind the devices, is that the devices are incuse not raised.

These letters are incuse - below the level of where the scratch is - that is why it appears like they are under them.
