Elizabeth 1st 1533-1603, was Queen of England and Ireland from November 17, 1558 until March 24 1603. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. She was the last monarch of the House of Tutor. Henry had Anne executed on trumped up charges of treason than had the marriage annulled and Elizabeth was declared illegitimate removing her royal secession.

Upon Henry's death in 1547 she son and half brother of Elizabeth became Edward VI. Edward only ruled until his death in 1553, ignoring his two half sisters Elizabeth and Mary (Bloody Mary), chose Lady Jane Grey to replace him. His choice was not upheld and Mary became queen. Mary was a devote Catholic and not a popular ruler, she at her her half sister Elizabeth imprisoned for a year for suspected support of Protestant Rebels, but was unable to prove the charge which saved Elizabeth from being executed. In 1558 Mary died and Elizabeth became queen. Elizabeth had a long and interesting reign, she never married and died in 1603.

Ron, I'm having a hard time figuring where this fits into the Sassanian, Artuqid, or Mauryan collections. I didn't know you collect modern coins!

Neat coin and good write-up. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Bob, it doesn't really fit but I've been interested in English hammered coins for a long time but never did get around to buying some until now thanks to Kevin.

As it turns out, the last Sasanian king Yazdegird III was not murdered in Merv as the legend goes but escaped to the Kingdom of Gwynedd in the far west of Britannia where the Welsh tongue corrupted the name Yazdegird into Yaz-Tudor...
