I have the opportunity to fill my Walking Liberty half dollar hole with a NGC MS63 1916-S. It is really nice with lustre. I have been selling off some of my coins and have enough to buy it flat out or put it on layaway. There are a lot of other coins that could be bought in that price range. So I am looking for some advice...would you pick this WL 1/2 $ up or would you buy something else and settle for a higher grade and lesser Key date? I'll be posting some Type coins here soon in the Selling Forum. Might as well pass them along! Edited by Nelrak 07/30/2008 11:52 pm

usually I would always say go for the key date coin but I would also say buy and keep the coin in the slab because of fakes and resale value but if this is the direction you are taking with the album then I say go for it, you know its a real coin and if you ever have to sell it you can always resend it off for reslabbing

If you like the eye appeal of the coin and the price seems okay to you, then it seems reasonable. CCDN actually lists the 1916S NGC MS63 as slightly higher than the PCGS, which means the NGC slab is worth keeping even if you take the coin out to put in your album. One last thing to remember is that the grading standards for WLHs are relaxed for coins before 1930, particularly with respect to skirt lines so you could definitely find a cheaper, prettier coin from the 40s.

As far as I'm conserned any type set is primarily for show. They are the type of collection that people like to show off with. Some type sets are framed and hung instead of a picture. Some are displayed on shelves. So if your intent it to show people or let people see one, just fill the thing with what ever you like. Excessive amounts of money on a coin in a book is of little interest to people more than just any date of mint mark.

Point taken, Carl and I agree. If you ever have any nice Type you decide to move along, keep me in mind.

Nalrak, for me I'm going for common dates so I can have a nice example of each coin for my 7070. That being said, MS63 is as high as I would go anyway. Especially for a coin that's being cracked out. When browsing through the pages you have to really look to see the difference, especially behind the shiney plastic sleeve.
I would suggest getting a high AU - low MS common example and use the extra budget money on filling more coins.
But in the end the choice is yours.

Quote: hat being said, MS63 is as high as I would go anyway. Especially for a coin that's being cracked out I can't say that because some of mine in my 7070 was in 64,65,66 NGC/PCGS slabs and I cracked them out, they were not key dates or anything but real nice looking coins. when I look at my dansco album it looks like I have cracked out more MS coins than I have cracked out AU coins (AU-50 is the lowest grade coin in the album, the highest being a MS-66 steel cent graded by NGC)

If the sub-theme of your 7070 is to have a first-year example of every type, I say go for it, but if not, I think an MS-65+ coin from the later years would do it for me.

I had/have the option to buy the 16-S MS63 for $1600, which is between Greysheet Bid and Ask.
I opted to populate my collection with other coins I have been missing. I purchased a PCGS PR64 1940 WL half for a third of what the 16-S would have cost me. I still may put the 16-S on layaway since I have 4 months to pay for it and use it as trade bait. I think my days of cracking out coins are over other than getting nice common grades for my 7070.
