I have a 1937p Walking Liberty half graded by PCGS MS64 prior to 1984. I was getting ready to put this coin up for auction and when I enlarged the pictures, I noticed a letter "E" to the left of IGWT. Any ideas if this is an error or a flaw? The E is barely visible without magnification. The size is off for this coin so I don't believe it is a double struck. Could it have been on the blank? Thanks for any help. <<<Edited by tights24 to remove all caps. this is a form of internet yelling. >>>Image: FRONT.gif64.93 KB Image: BACK.gif60.36 KB Edited by halfdollar1951 08/04/2008 09:41 am

halfdollar,
Let's start by also posting pics of the entire obverse and reverse of the coin. A "double struck" would not yield something like this. It would be called a die clash, where the dies would have come together without a planchet in between, and would impart the design onto the other half.
Having said that, I can't tell you what you have going on, but some of the experts will be sure to help you out.
Welcome to the forum!!

Looks like a possible dropped letter from the E in E PLURIBUS UMUM. Like Tights said, could you post pics of the entire coin?

It's hard to tell by the pictures provided. It's *possible* that it is just regular damage to the coin that looks like an E, somewhat like the "face on Mars" effect. Can you tell if the E is raised or detect anything else when looking through a magnifier and shifting the coin in the light?

in my opinion it looks way to thin to be a dropped "E" from the motto or any other "E" from a walking Liberty

after looking closely,I see that is not raised ,but indented,so it may be just what steamwalker says, damaged or scratched.I will bring it to a coin expert and see what he thinks. thanks to all.

I think it is just the mind seeing some mark and trying to force it into a recognized pattern.
And this can't have been graded by PCGS prior to 1984. PCGS didn't exist until Feb 1986.
