Hello all,
I wanted to buy a bag of junk silver coins for the silver content,
but the sales person sold me on a bag of Walking Liberty half dollars
@ 9.97 per coin. Is this reasonable or should I check elswhere? Thanks so much

I will forewarn you, don't take my info as 100% correct. Because there's a good chance that it's wrong. Here's a link to the complete melt value of Walking Liberty halves...

http://www.meltvalue.silvermonthly.com/

So if they are crap coins, no good detail etc, then I don't think that the price is worth it. Use the calculator and the melt price comes out to about $6.2.

$9.97 is way (WAY) too high for junk silver walkers. If you want junk silver you shouldn't pay such a high premium.

Before we shoot the dealer.......

My dealer has two "junk" silver prices - the lower price are truly common silvers such as Kennedy's, Roosevelts, late washingtons and late mercuries. The second and higher price gets you better grade common ones plus the Walking Liberties, Franklins and the occasional Barber quater or Half. It's been awhile since I bought any, but the last time it was 10x face and 12x face.

I guess my point is to make sure that the sales person knew that you REALLY only wanted the silver and had absolutely no interest in any numismatic value. In asking for this, you might also mention 'culls' or 'damaged' is ok.

$9.97 is very high. Waht were the coins like? If they were AU, then it was an OK deal. But I agree that this is not what you were asking for.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Appears not to many are sending out the WELCOME flags.
Actually it all depends on what that person considers junk Silver. To them it may be just common dates in poor condition or dented, scratched, drilled holes, etc. If these are really garbage, then way to high of a price. However, you should look at the coins first. They may well be just worn but still in Fine or almost fine and common dates. You said sales person. Did you mean in a hobby store? Coin store? independant coin dealer? Flea market? Like I said so much depends on what that person's ideas are of JUNK.
At a flea market I go to there is a person that has numerous coins for sale. They are just dumped into large bins. Two bins for US and one for foreign. He considers them all JUNK coins. I've found a few Mercury dimes in there that are in the HUNDREDS of dollar area for $1 each. One was a 42/41.
So again so much depends on who, what, where, etc. Get to know coins and who knows.

to the forum, Emfrimbo!

I agree that this is too high a price for junk coins at melt value. If that bag contains higher quality coins and some less common dates, then it could be a good buy. I would not purchase this bag without having the opportunity to check the coins first. Here is where being educated on the key dates, varieties, and grading of the WL series is important.

Can't remember if you were "welcomed" in the "Introduce Yourself" section of the forum or not........if you already have .....well "welcome again". !!...

Don't buy at that price and yes check elsewhere !
The "dealer/seller" will likely know that these are "junk or common dates"....so he's just making more money than he should here probably !
Talk him down or go somewhere else !...
