This morgan is not in the best of shape since it was in the wallet of an elderly relative of mine literally for 60 years. My question is how does a morgan gain this color of toning? Also Do the scratches on the obverse seem kind of odd? It looks like those beneath her chin are raised rather than cut into the field. Thanks!

Natural toning is always the result of environment ,, moisture ,gasses from leather and paper (Sulfur) changing temps and a myriad of other conditions.

The scratches look like purposeful damage it could have been from anything since the coin looks to have circulated quite a bit before being put away .

Metalman- actually this relative of mine claims that it was mint when he got it in the 40s. I don't think that he would have intentionally damaged it since it was sentimental to him. I think that he did keep some keys in the wallet though.

I suppose that the coin could show the wear that it displays from many years in a wallet , and keys stored next to it could have caused the damage , but there would have to have been alot of movement by both to have worn the coin and scratched the surface with the keys .

The coin exhibits text book wear patterns on its surfaces (other than the scratches ) of course .

The coin has an interesting history and the sentimental value it holds is priceless .

could I ask if the coins date holds significance to the owner ? why did he carry it in his wallet ?

Metalman-It was given to him on his wedding day in 1948 by a family friend. He kept it in his wallet all this time for luck and to remind him of that important day.

Hmm. I would've thought paper to be pretty inert, but I guess not!

You're saying that contact with paper can cause toning?

Interesting.

The process of making paper from pulp includes sulphur, and it is the sulphur that interacts with the silver. That's why NGC had to add a phlange in their holders, the paper inserts in the first generation holders were causing toning.

OK so I'm about to knock elderly people. I too am rather on the old side and memmory is no where near as good as it should be or could be. Although he THINKS that coin was in great shape when he put it there and if he hasn't looked at it in many years, who knows what it looked like originally. I have a difficult time rememboring why I go out to the garage or in the basement most of the time let alone a coin I put away 60 years ago. I've been collecting coins for well over 60 years and have no idea where I put many of them anymore. I too think I used to have a favorite coin I carried all the time but it ended up in the washing machine so much I stopped that.
That coin may well have looked great to him back then but no one will ever know what it really looked like.
