I have recently purchased some New Zealand predecimal coins in a bulk lot. Basically they were sets namely half penny, penny, threepence, sixpence, shilling, florin and half crown. I was wondering if anybody else collects these coins and what they are worth?

Also if there are members who collect these I am chasing a 1956 penny and a 1953-65 half crown.

I collect NZ and have some 'sets', but not totally complete ones. I'm pretty sure I've got threepence, sixpence & shilling sets. I'm missing the 1935 threepence. I only have a few pennies, ha'pennies & florins, no half crowns at all. No varieties either.

I have the latest NZ catalogue & prices for sets in average condition are:

Ha'penny - $35
Penny - $35 (excludes varieties)
Threepence - $230 (Includes 1935 but excludes varieties) (without 1935 - $50)
Sixpence - $70 (excludes varieties)
shilling - $95 (excludes varieties)
Florin - $110 (excludes varieties)
Half Crown - $125 (excludes varieties)

Hope this helps you. If you want to get a Catalogue, I can PM you the Authors' email address. When I got mine in May 08, it cost NZ$16.00 which Incl postage to Australia.

There are a couple of 1956 pennies on ebay at the moment. One ends in 12 hours and has no bids. Low price, reasonable shipping and graded VF.

Might be worth a look.

I was just sorting through a dealer's box and I seem to recall a few '56 pennies in there--darn, I would've picked them up for you.

I also collect NZ coins and banknotes. I fall along the lines of what Nancy has. I also have a complete set of half-pennies, 3 pence ( I have 2 of the 1935), 6 pence, shillings & florins. I have a few half crowns, crowns and pennies.

Your best bet is to get the catalog. I use The NZ coin and banknote catalogue by Howard Mitchell.
Which you can find on ebay usually.

Thanks. I have a price guide now. I am sure I got a bargin as the sets are in very good condition including some uncirculated coins. The threepence set included a nice 1935 threepence and the sets even include some variations. I'm very happy. I got them very cheaply (<$200 incluing postage for the lot). I will probably buy the missing coins on ebay if nobody has any here.
