If you are ever tempted to buy bulk pennies from ebay, here is my adventure !

Back in 2017 I bought 2,000 copper pennies from ebay. Total cost was $35 USD. Dates ranged from 1959 to 1982.
I was looking for 3 things:
1: pre 1975 coins with a good amount of mint luster
2: mint errors
3: key dates

I used 4x magnification to inspect each coin, and 16x magnification to view possible mint errors.

As far as mint luster, I found many pennies in EF and AU condition. About 1 in 80.

As far as mint errors, I found 7 minor die cracks, one die crack that was over 30%, 1 minor Cud, and 2 with Mechanical Doubling.
I did not bother with minor misaligned dies, or minor off centers ( which are very common in older coins )

As far as key dates, there isn't much on the lower grading end of copper memorial pennies. I pulled out one 1970 S small date in pretty rough condition.

===

The pennies were pretty dirty - I had a lot more crud on my fingers from handling these coins, than when I go roll hunting.
I took over a year to finish off the bag - I kept getting side traced.
Overall, there wasn't much to report on. I find more interesting stuff in normal bank rolls to be honest.

Well after being on there a few months, then go back over them again to see what you missed the first time. Then wait a few months then go back over them again. You can learn a lot here quickly. I get you've missed at leave 20% of other things you will learn hear about. So don't get rid of them yet.

The appeal of such a search is lost on me, but thanks for the analysis. Will you do this again?

I still have 50+ rolls from the bank to look at.
If I have a lot of time on my hands, I may try my luck with a few thousand dimes next time :)

if you got 200$ worth of pennies for 35$. I would say you did very well.

It was to be 2,000 not 20,000

Though I wouldn't mind getting 20K pennies for $35 USD :)

There are a ton of varieties in that date range to look for. My advice wold be to separate them by date , then , before searching through them, go over that date on the main listing sites. This way you will have the known varieties fresh in your mind as you search that date
