I received this 1812 half dollar from my grandfather. Not quite sure what the thing is at the top. I'm thinking its a planchet flaw but I'd like a second opinion. Thanks everyone!

I'm no expert in this area, but it looks like PMD to me.

I don't thing it's PMD. It almost looks like some type of planchet or lamination anomaly. Can you give us some closer and different light/angles of that area on top of her head?

Sure. Heres some more angles of it. To me it really looks like a strange planchet flaw or something. Hard to tell though. It does go through the coin also. Evident on the side.

To me, the reverse looks like a planchet flaw. The obverse looks like the same flaw with a lamination that got pushed away from the coin. You can see the "divit" where the lamination got pushed out/off the coin. I'm not sure if that would be enough to be considered damage though. JMHO

Don't pick at it. Is that piece of metal on top of her head look like it's lifting/protruding "up" from the rest of the coin?

Someone needs to call doctor coop! Calling doctor coop, Calling doctor coop.....STAT! STAT!

My vote is for planchet flaw - I just don't see how the entire defect can be explained by any sort of PMD

The part on the top of her head is not lifting up. It's not raised from the coin either. That's why I didn't think it was a lamination. Also, thanks for replies everyone! Appreciate it

A lamination doesn't have to lift off the coin. Its just a separation in the metal that looks like a split. On your's, it looks like the separation got pushed to the left causing the raised vertical portion. Here's a lamination on one of my Bust Halves that's fully retained in the coin....

I vote yes for planchet flaw and no for lamination.

The OP coin is a cracked planchet.
