i know that you can exclude a limited number of sellers in your search criteria, but for a field with as many auctions as numismatics, it's cumbersome and far too limited. i just get SO tired of seeing "BU UNCIRC BEAUTIFUL COIN"s that look like they were carried around in somebody's shoe for 30 years, then cleaned with a brillo pad... then shot way overexposed to make them look "bright" for the thumbnail photo. Not to mention "KEY DATE!"s that were minted in the tens of millions (and that's for silver dollars). If they are familiar enough with the hobby to know the appropriate terms, they know they're outright lying. It gets to the point where I'm sorely tempted to email them just to cuss them out. How can these people live with themselves? (rant over) Edited by PennehChaos 08/01/2008 12:43 pm

I agree with you. I think ebay's laissez-faire attitude will continue until some of their chickens come home to roost. Peter in Oz

Unfortunately, as in other areas, they view it as just a "job" and ethics take last place. Law, Politics, Education, Religion,Medicine, Sports, Local Governance, I can easily recall all of these areas being in the news this last week for violating ethical and legal limits. I see many "BU" dollar specials in Coin World that will not be BU anymore than the ones on ebay. Sorry if it sounds cynical. Pick your friends and trusted ones carefully. Jim

It would be nice if anyone on ebay could rate an auction for accuracy. This nonsense isn't limited to coins, but any items that are pushed hard due to perceived collector demand, "investment", etc. Any "luxury good" is open game for forgery or misrepresentation. I once sent lawyers after people selling fake watches on ebay...that felt good.

Yes, pick your sellers carefully. I've had excellent luck with a few in particular who are completely open and honest, even though they make mistakes from time to time. They aren't hard to find ... 98% positive feedback, or better ... over a thousand transactions ... no hype in the descriptions ... clear photos ... accept personal checks and/or money orders ... etc. BTW a seller who accepts ONLY PayPal gets my instant bypass. I've never had a PayPal account and never will. When ebay took over PayPal, the garage-sale, bargain-bin atmosphere of ebay went down the toilet. I've been on almost since the beginning ... I was one of the first 300 registrants ... and I've seen a plethora of changes, not all good, since the inception. Nevertheless, in spite of a few sellers who took my money and never sent the item sold, I've generally had good luck on ebay.

pls, I was an early registrant for East Bay internet auctions back only God knows when, and I recall it morphed into ebay. Am I just getting "old folk's memory" or do you remember it? Originally it was only stamps and coins, and very clunky. Jim

Jim, I don't remember East Bay as such. Back in the day I'd buy stuff via AOL's buy/sell site, mostly computer parts, and then one day it sort of dried up and someone on the site referenced ebay. First part I bought via ebay was a 486 CPU chip, and the hussy that sold it took a month to ship it, informing me that she was sorry but her husband had just left her and she was so messed up. Whatever! But I continued and now have over a thousand transactions, including some sales of broken photographic equipment which I realized something like a 600% profit on! (Yes, I advertised each one - without photos, mind you - as "parts only".) So I do believe that you must pre-date my registration, from what you say.
