As a relatively new member, I probably have missed discussions of this topic before... but, for the uninitiated how does consigning to Heritage, Bowers & Merena or Stacks pan out for most people for better early silver, colonials, and high grade staple classic coins? How do these auction houses compare with one another? Is it best to consign during a big show? Does the house generally make good choices of where and when the coins are auctioned? What are pitfalls?

Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice...

I doubt you'll find anyone who has experience with more than one of those houses. All are reputable and have their followings. A big show might bring in a floor bidder who makes the top bid.

The pitfall is the time it takes to get your money. Some will pay an advance, but they usually charge interest on that money.
