I had set this 1957D aside as it was the highest grade I'd found yet. Put it under a microscope today, and looks like a BIE! Literally highest grade out of maybe 350 1957D's I looked through. I know BIE's aren't rare in the 50's but now I'm curious what the percentages are. Is that info out on the web somewhere?

You're correct - nice example of a common BIE die hip, particularly for this year.

Looks like a couple die chips, one at BE, and another at the 9 in date.
I don't know what was going on at the mints in the late 50's but, of all the mistakes I've found, overwhelmingly it seems 1957 and 1958 stand out. I have so many die chips at the date on 1957's, if I photographed them side by side, you could almost see the Die Deterioration progression.
Maybe they weren't finished celebrating the End of Korean War yet ?
Just a few samples, ALL are 1957.

Dan

@SOT, with regard to your question about percentages, I don't think that I have seen that info previously. I do note that a previous CCF thread referenced Herbert's book with its prices. Of course the pricing will no longer be accurate, but the relative scarcity might be roughly proportional to those prices. Here is a link to the thread:
