Looks more like it was placed between two pieces of leather and then hammer and it flattened the devices. The more they beat on it, the larger the coin will become. If placed in a vise and tightened even more, the coin gets a lot wider.

So hammering the coin or placing in a vice wouldn't change the diameter of the coin?

Could also be a Dryer Coin, either way it's just damage and not an error.

When this is done to a Wheat cent, the plating falls off the coin.
