Looks like we may never know if it is cleaned or not, as the coin appears to have been lost in the mail. The seller says if it doesn't come in a couple of days I will receive a refund. I'm not sure if I should take this as a sign from the universe saying I dodged a bullet or that I missed a really good deal.

Based on the pictures, I am leaning more towards dodged a bullet. I don't like the look of the coin either.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I now find myself in a peculiar situation regarding this coin. So last time I posted about it got lost in the mail, (which at that point I was okay with) ebay gave me a refund even after the seller stopped talking to me and everything was great. Now the coin has showed up, but I've already received a refund AND the seller insured the package which I'm assuming redeemed so both parties have been made whole from a monetary point of view... except I have the coin now. What do I do now? ship it back? Keep it? I've already spent the funds I had allocated to this coin so I'd rather not have to pay for it again.

Let me know your thoughts on matter, here are some in hand photos so you can judge the originality of it. In hand it looks lighter in color than normal, but I'll let you guys judge for yourselves.

Send back to seller. Make sure you have a signature to prove item was returned.

Yeah, it is not a keeper. I think the 1909-S is a sleeper, and encourage the OP to pick up a nice high grade example. Probably scarcer than the VDB since they were not saved at the time.
