I thought I would share a quick anecdote about a great coin I just bought on
ebay (on Dec 26th) from a seller in Carson City. I often search for this date, as it is a semi-key and every winter when I become a little more active in pursuing new specimens for my collection, I attempt to locate a decent one (or two) if possible. When I came across this one, I jumped on it (bought it six hours after it was listed), due to the fact the price was considerably lower than market and it looked like a solid XF (or better).
Here is the listing (it was actually a starting bid at $70; BIN for $100):

So I started to get the impression the seller might be a tad naive about this coin and its grade/value. Then I look at his other items for sale and its all stuff like this:

So now I'm pretty positive that nothing is fishy about this coin, we just have a seller that might not know the value of this coin, or just doesn't care that much.
Wait, the story gets better...
Here is our message exchange after he sends me the tracking number:
Me:
Excellent, thank you very much!
I notice you typically sell other kinds of items (not coins); can you tell me where you acquired this Mercury dime (just curious)?
Thanks again, I look forward to seeing the coin in hand.eBay seller:
I got it from change when I lived in New York about 30 or so years ago!Me:
Wow, impressive and lucky to get a Mercury dime in change in the 1980s in NY, let alone a 1926-S! Probably came out of someone's coin collection even back then. Interesting story for sure. Do you remember where in NY you got the dime in change? New York City? Thanks.eBay seller:
I believe it was Brooklyn when I was working as a roofer on a hospital there,
There was a lot of construction going on at the time.
The deli's in the area where super busy with all the workers!Me:
Wow, what a neat story about this coin! From San Fransisco ("S" mint) to Brooklyn to Carson City now to Syracuse.
And you held onto this coin for all these years after getting it in change...just curious, what made you decide to sell now...day after Christmas 2018?
If it looks as good as I'm hoping, I may just keep it for 30 years myself!eBay seller:
I been selling coins and paper money for a few years now.
I basically collect error money and sell just to do something, I am retired for 6 years now and I;m bored!
Plus it's better I get the money for my collection then my kids, they need to make their own way in life and not depend on mine!!!
So, I thought that was pretty darn cool (assuming it's true)! Here's the coin in its new home!

Here is a link to my other post too, with more photos for anyone interested...discussion about grade, etc:
