I'm wondering if that error coin also had the double ear it? Looks like something is going on in that area

You definitely have the "BIE". The ear though isn't doubled. That was caused by a coin contact mark, which would be Post Strike Damage ( PSD).

It is a straight-up BIE, but the ear looks normal to me with wear.

Note on the doubled ear examples, the doubling is extra for the ear. Not just a contact mark on that device. The same mark on any other area of coin would just be a contact mark. When a contact mark happens on an ear, it's still a contact mark. Take a closer look on the images and see what is really going on with a doubled ear lobe. Don't just look for an incuse mark on the ear lobe.
