Hey group, I'm asking for help identifing the cause of the Damage done to the clad layer. From what I've read and learned about clad errors, this obviously is not one. I'm keeping the coin and wanted to correctly label the flip. Keeping for example, Thanks guys
I'd agree with acid. A ground find would be smoother and more brown from nickel leaching, but this looks like a more aggressive chemical attack evidenced by pitting. Nitric acid maybe?
It could. The coin was probably dark and they wanted to light up the surface. Best thing to do is to spend them to keep wasting time on a face value coin. Move on to the next coin.
