JP, the mintmark on your coin is way to far left to match 1-mm-014 on Charle's site. I think what you have here is the sharpe edge of the mintmark pierced the copper layer and corrosion is giving the appearence of doubling. Happens quite often on the copper/zinc cents.

Agreed - this is a form of machine / Strike Doubling that scraps away the copper plating, exposing the zinc and giving the appearance of strong doubling. This is extremely common all copper / zing cents. You can normally identifying it from real RPMM because it almost always occurs to the lower right of the mint mark and there is normally no corresponding doubling on the inside of the mint mark.

I think I see a double serif on the upper left of mint mark and I see ridge lines on the numbers, what would cause that?

I think a closer look would be need on this coin. I think what I see is Machine Doubling. That would account for the mark under the D (Close, not the split area of plating) and marks on the date. The mark that John1 sees does look interesting, but rough area also appear under the 1. So a closer image might help. But my gut says it machine doubling/die movement. But a closer look might help.

The mint mark shows signs of corrosion and as suggested, the strike breaks through the copper plating. That exposes the zinc and corrosion begins.

I am curious about the date though.

Can you make a picture that is larger of just the date area with the mint mark?

Thanks,
Bill

Try to use a higher magnification and use a light source other than the leds on the unit.

With that thing, you can get a picture of a mite on the back of a flea:-)

Getting a focused shot closer to the 200X would be tough so go for about 30X to 50X. Try to get it head on. The key is getting the shot focused. Your picture above is just to the small side to see what I am looking for and that picture is really not bad. I just need one about twice that size with high resolution.

Don't reduce the size of the picture. If it is too large to post here, email me a copy.

You can email me by clicking on foundinrolls seen at the left of any post and then using the link in my profile to to email me from there.

Thanks,
Bill

The overall size of the devices look normal. The marks could just be ejection marks. It happens.
