I am really stumped and irritated by this situation. Late last year I bid on a low-value coin being sold by a Spanish Auction house. As it was low value, as soon as I received the invoice, I paid by Paypal( for large payments in the EU I usually use Bank transfer). I never received an acknowledgement but as the payment was made on the 21st December I just assumed the festive season was to blame. Middle of last week I received some higher value items from an Italian Auction house( paid by Bank Transfer). So started thinking about the Spanish purchase. I emailed them on Thursday and on Friday I received a reply informing me they hadn't received my payment. I replied attaching a PDF of the Paypal Payment record. They have not responded. So today I sent them the same proof of payment attachment and asked for a response. I also noted that if no response is received I will request a refund through PayPal. My real concern is I found the item through Six bid( although I bid on the Auctioneers website). I am concerned this auction house will be able to negatively effect my buying ability through six bid. I am now thinking that it is better not to request the refund, and if I don't get a reply that I complain to sixbid( the amount is just under €40.00). My thinking is it is best to have the proof of payment and lose the money than to have my reputation as a coin collector damaged. Needless to say... the auction house concerned has lost my future custom.

Um, what?! Get your money back. This is about seller reputation, not buyer reputation.

that was indeed my first reaction. I am not fully conversant how Auction houses work in the USA ( I have only purchased from Stephen Album, Stacks Bowers and Heritage. Here in Europe, many Auction houses require bidders to provide references and ID details before they approve buyers for online bidding. The references usually accepted are other Auction houses, I have gained the impression that a Bad Buyer can find themselves locked out of the online( non-eBay) if they get the reputation of bidding and not paying.

The point is moot now.. the firm responded telling me they have now "Found" my payment. I use the scare quotes as I paid using the Email address provided on the Invoice they sent me. It was placed directly after the Bank account details and the statement that there was 4% to be added to the bill for PayPal. I am pretty sure the New Account Email, is exactly the same as the one I used. I still won't buy from them again. the fact they hadn't chased m for payment suggests a more relaxed attitude than I am used to.

Glad to hear this did not end in one of the worse case scenarios.

@austrokiwi, I'm glad it worked out.

I've had some similar glitches with some eastern European auction houses which use OneBid. Often I find that when I click the button to pay via paypal instead of bank transfer, I get an invoice with the paypal 4% surcharge added, but not the shipping . Which then requires some email contact to resolve.

As for the references, I would guess with a track record at Heritage and Stacks, you don't need any other references, even in Europe. (I have likewise had one issue with a European auction house, and I never submit them
as a reference).
