Im new. I want to collect coins as recently iv become fascinated with the designs on them and also, before the earth starts swiping cards and going online for all transactions, I want in on the awesomeness before our pockets are weightless and the zombie Apocalypse threatens mankind to extinction, or werewolves force bullion collectors to melt the silver to make bullets. Whatever the case, I'm finding coins interesting and hope this is not a fad, Heaven knows, I'm not dealing with the Zombie Apocalypse.

Quote: To me they are little pieces of American history I agree, but would expand on this as many of the pieces in my collection are not from the US: "little pieces of world history".

I think the urge to collect has been engrained in humans since the beginning. Collecting coins, antiques, or classic cars is an extension of the hunter and gatherer mentality of our ancestors.

I have a small collection by accident. I was a kid before 1964, and ended up saving the silver coins I happened to have before they stopped minting silver coins. Then about 20+ years ago, I bought "junk silver coins" from a dealer for the bullion content, but I recently discovered that a bunch of the coins are more valuable than that, such as Barber dimes and quarters in decent condition. I just started looking through these coins again, and ended up here to find out more.

I think as a kid (9-13) you either have an interest in coins or you DON'T . With me I was fascinated with wheat cents ,still am . So yes the interest of coins had been in me right from the beginning and will always be in me to the day I pass .

That happened to me with razors, too. I remember watching my dad shaving, and my mom took a photo of me using his razor after she had removed the blade.
I kept using old razors like that, and ended up as a moderator at a shaving forum where the main interest is older style (non-cartridge) razors - shavemyface.com.
Now it's a "thing," and small companies are making new versions of these old razors, such as the Supply injector razor or the Phoenix slant bar razors.
So my best bet for getting more coins might be swapping vintage razors for them. :)
