I've been reading about roll searching for a while now, and one aspect has got me confused: is it more popular to re-roll coins and mark the roll, to denote it's been searched, or to simply dump all the coins in a coin sorting machine and get more coins elsewhere?

I re roll all of mine .
The bank I use for my accounts only takes rolled coin .
I get new rolls from many varied other places but I still mark the rolls so I can tell if I have had them before .

I re-roll all of mine as well. However, I don't mark my rolls, since I almost always just get a sealed box (so that I know the rolls haven't been searched yet). And I reroll in the clear plastic rolls that come in the box, so when I do pick up loose rolls, they are almost always in paper rolls / shotgun rolls, so I know I haven't looked through those either...so I got a little system that's worked so far

Myself, I just dump batches without re-rolling and have not had an issue with my bank.
Though it certainly happens, I do NOT think that most roll searches "mark" their rolls.

I don't re-roll, I just take them to the bank and let them take care of it. Cheungsta, how in the world do you get the coins out of the clear plastic without ripping it?

I reroll...
It helps me keep things neat...
After searching through the first roll I push the ones I won't be keeping into a pile and call them my spares. Then I open my second roll. If I decide to keep a coin from this second roll, I then take one of the spares and place it in the second batch. Once I'm done searching through the second roll, I reroll it and place it to the side. This way I don't have to do any counting and I don't end up with a pile of coins cluttering up my desk.
(My wife is real big on keeping things neat...)

Do you guys use coin rolling machines? I think that might be a fine option if nothing else.

nope...no machine for me. I pretty much do the same as springcypress...re-roll as I search.
krafty - I just tend to slide/squeeze them out...the only rolls that rip on occasion are cent rolls, but I've plenty of extras =)

I re-roll them and put a small line somewhere on the roll. Hate doing things twice.

I have to re-roll all of mine because I do not have a coin counter at the bank I drop off at. I also do not get rolls and dump them at the same place. I lucked out when my wife was working and had the chance to go through most of the rolls they had there. Everyone knew what I was doing and still give me a bad time but everyone knew what I had already searched through. After I did that, I started getting the rolls from our other bank and bring them back to the first one when I was done that way I had a very slim chance of ever double searching a roll.

Life is to short to spend on rerolling coins for me. I used to just take a canvas bag of coins to a bank and they would run them through their counters. HOWEVER, although I have accounts in 5 different banks, they all told me they are fasing out coin counting machines. Anone that brings in coins in bulk will be told they can no longer accept them. Bank of America told me that anyone bringing in bags or rolls of coins will have them put into a bank bag, sent to a nome office, counted there and the amount entered into an account. No cash will be returned for coinage. This process may take up to two weeks. From what they tell me this will soon be normal everywhere due to roll searchers just returning the same coins they just took out of the banks or short rolls being made to save money. I now just find ways to spend all change for just about everything.

i actually opened up an account with local credit union specifically because they have a free coin counter for customers... I couldn't sort half the volume I do if I had to re-roll them

Exactly, springcypress. I re-roll to keep my coins from rubbing together anymore than necessary. And I have a moderate case of OCD, so they are all facing the same way and the date along with pertinent information are on the outside in a set format. OK, maybe not so moderate.

For those that re roll and then mark the wrapper so you know that you have already searched that roll, a question for you. Should a teller hand you that roll in the future, do you say that you do not want that roll of coins and ask for another?

I normally crack the roll open using my forehead right there, dump the coins all over the counter and demand a new one.

Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna spend my time rerolling coins when I could just get new ones somewhere else and not worry about searching through the same ones.
